FAQ

Why would I want to rent from You?

Easy!  Because we provide customer service above and beyond the call of duty.  We answer all your questions before, during, and after the reservation process.  We are there to personally greet you upon your arrival at the airport, and escort you to your vehicle.  Your fully equipped, immaculate vehicle will have a full tank of gas, propane, and water.  She is ready! We provide you with an informative orientation, to make your trip easier and most enjoyable.  We are available to our traveling guests 24/7.  It's like they say, "You get what you pay for."

How safe are these vehicles? Are they maintained often? They ARE OLD, after all.

Our family of camper buses receive the most meticulous and loving care any vehicle could possibly hope for.  They are routinely maintained and serviced by an authorized VW automotive repair shop, after having been thoroughly gone over by none other than Gary Berg himself. (see "About us" for the reason of this namedropping)  "Sanitized for your convenience!"  is our motto! Our menehune maid thoroughly cleans and fully details each vehicle after every rental.  Just because a vehicle is OLD, doesn't mean it can't still be going strong!

What if the bus malfunctions, has a flat tire, or breaks down?

Bummer.  Call us immediately.  You will be given our cell phone # to call if it is after hours.  Assistance, and/or vehicle replacement is on it's way.  However, this event would be a very RARE occurance!

I'm seeing red lights!  What do I do?

STOP!  If it's not a street light, then pull over immediately, and call us!  Those little red indicator lights on the dash really do mean something! Please do not ignore them.

What do I do in case of an accident?

Don't panic.  Hawaii State law requires you to first call the police, and report the accident.  Accident report procedures and local emergency phone numbers can be found in the handy information packet located in the glove box.  Then call us as soon as possible.

What about Insurance?

We provide the Hawaii State minimum coverage:

Liability to others:  1)  Bodily injury $20,000/$40,000.   2)  Property damage $10,000.  Personal injury protection (PIP) coverage- Medical expenses only; $10,000.

Additional Insurance coverage must be provided You.  If you have a home or auto insurance policy that covers mini-van rentals in Hawaii, and you have full coverage (liability, comprehensive, and collision) you will be able to insure our vehicle.   Check with your insurance company.  It is best to purchase a 'binder' from your insurance company- these generally provide you with the best coverage for your rental. You will need to provide us your insurance information prior to the rental so we may verify the coverage. You will need to bring a copy of your policy/ or binder with you. We will provide you with the VIN number and registration information at the time of booking.  Please note that Insurance provided by credit card companies does not cover vehicles older than 20 years, or RV rentals.  We do not sell any insurance coverage for your rental; it must be provided by youYou are responsible for all damage or loss you cause to the vehicle or others, regardless of fault.  You will indemnify, defend and hold Us harmless from all liability, cost and attorney fees arising out of Use of the Vehicle that are in excess of or excluded from the protection provided by You.

Adventures T-shirt, holding a sign with your name on it.)   We will be waiting for you with your dream Camper Bus.  (Unless other arrangements have been made.)  If your flight is delayed, please call us A.S.A.P to advise us of the time change.  Please Note; there is NO pick - up service at the Kona airport.

Is there a "minimum" length of rental time?

Yes, actually, there is.  We ask for a 7 day minimum rental period from October through February.  From March through September we ask a 5 day minimum rental period.

I've read about tourist vehicles being broken into, should I Worry, or just relax, and leave the keys in the ignition?

"Real" rental cars DO get robbed from time to time.  But those are the Obvious rental cars that scream "tourist!".  In OUR vehicle, you look like just another local person driving around.  Besides, it's a VW!  No one messes with VW's!!  (knock on wood!)

How do I know which Camper I will get; and can I request a certain one?

The Camper vehicle you receive will be based on several factors:  One is availability, another is by the number in your party, and if you can drive a stick shift.

If you express a choice, we will do our very best to accommodate you.  However, due to the great unknown/unforeseen powers that be, we cannot promise  your request of camper choice.

What if my brain is too fried from City Life, and I don't know what to do when I get there. Can you give me an itinerary?

Sure, we can. Take a deep breath, and click the button. Nice and easy.....Week Itinerary

How far in advance should I book my reservation in order to secure the dates I want?

Ahh, grasshopper, this is one of the great mysteries.  In the slower season (March-August), you can take a crap shoot and book closer to your dates of travel.  Holidays book up fast.  In the busier season, it is best to book as soon as possible. If you have your flights already booked, (into Hilo hopefully) then waste no time reserving with us. We only have 4 vehicles, and everyone seems to want them at once!

What type of gas should I fill it with, and what if I run out of propane?

We require you run it only with SUPREME/PREMIUM gas.  This will give you the best vehicle performance, and lessens engine damage.  There is one weeks worth of propane in it.  Should you run out, filling locations are readily available island wide.

Must I refill the Propane tank, launder the linens, wash the dishes, and scrub the chimney, before returning the vehicle?

No, that's all a part of your vacation.  It wouldn't be much of a vacation if you had to do all that!!

Is the water in it filtered; safe to drink?

The water is NOT filtered.  We fill the 15 gallon holding tank with potable city water.  It is considered safe to drink.  If you want additional purification for drinking, (we recommend) you can rent a portable 5 gallon water jug from us, for an additional manini fee, and fill it up in any of the numerous water purifier machines located outside of grocery stores.

What exactly is included in the camper?

That's a big Question. HERE'S your Answer!

Can I have it fully loaded with groceries as soon as I arrive?

Nope, we want you to have the pleasure of gagging on the cost of groceries for yourself!  You may not want that extra box of cereal, after all!  Of course, if your coming from England, you'll have the pleasure of the LOW cost of groceries!!

Are there any "hidden" charges?

NO.  We tell you all about the $3.00 per day State of Hawaii rental car surcharge, and the 4.1666% Hawaii G.E.T.  in the rental agreement.  Check out our  "Rates and Fees" page.

How can I get myself from the Kona airport to Hilo as painlessly as possible?

First of all, BOOK YOUR FLIGHT INTO the HILO AIRPORT!  If that is not possible, consider taking the local Bus.  That is your cheapest solution.   It's FREE.  Or, you can rent a small car from a major company at one airport and return it to the other.  Check first, as some will an additional fee for one-ways, some won't.  We meet you right there at the rental car return area.  Shuffle your stuff from one rental car to your rental "room"; no muss-no fuss.

  Can I smoke inside?

NO WAY.  Don't even think about it.  You will automatically forfeit  $250.00 of your security/cleaning deposit.

What if I visit a local friend, and their dog jumps without warning into the camper, eats my homework, and makes a mess of the place?

You better grab their vacuum quick.  We DO NOT allow pets in the campers, and we will spank you on the nose with a $250.00 cleaning fine!

Is there an additional charge to stuff a surfboard, bicycle, massage table, or 33 extra luggage bags?

Well, no, there is no charge.  However, our rule with surfboards is that they MUST be kept in a bag inside the vehicle, so they don't scratch anything, or get wax all over the joint.  (Yes, this does happen!)  The rule with bicycles is: NO bicycles allowed. Sorry.  Any other huge and bulky item you intend to bring should be declared at reservation time, so we can provide you with the most spacious vehicle.  It can be a very tight fit in these vehicles; so to get maximum enjoyment from your trip, we highly recommend you travel lightly!   (check out what we supply so you don't have to!)

Do you have a  Porta-potty we can rent?

No, ick! There aren't any public dumping facilities. (Except a public toilet, so why bother?) We had guests who highly recommend a disposable urinal product they found at a local RV store. The website is www.traveljohn.com

Is there a rental surcharge for additional drivers, or if anyone is under 25?

You may have as many additional drivers as you want, PROVIDED they have been authorized and signed the rental agreement contract.  Sorry, no one under 25 can rent.

What are my refrigeration options?

We have found that most people don't like the fuss and bother of starting and shutting down the propane refrigerator at each stop.  It must be switched to the electrical system before and during travel, and then back to propane upon stopping. This causes unwanted loss of cooling.  Also, for the propane to even function, you must always be parked absolutely level, which isn't always possible.

We recommend at least a 3 day stay in any one location to get maximum benefit from using the propane refrigerator.

With that in mind, we offer the option of using a large ice chest/cooler for your convenience, free of charge.

Can we take our Camper on the SuperFerry to the other Islands?

NO. Absolutely not.  Nope.  Besides, it is not currently running to the Big Island anyway!

  Can I have a FREE G.B. Adventures T-Shirt?

No, but you can $$- BUY as many as you like, and if we are in a good mood, may give you a "valued customer" discount!

What if I'm having too much fun and don't want to go home?

That happens a lot.  Hey... you can stay as long as you have the time and money for.  (Providing no one else has a previous booking.)  Life is short--HAVE FUN.   BE ADVENTUROUS.
